The MK test is a non-parametric method that detects monotonic trends in time-series data—ideal for environmental datasets that can be skewed, irregular, or include non-detects. The test outputs (S statistic and p-value) indicate the direction of change and whether the trend is statistically significant. In practice, MK helps determine whether conditions are improving, worsening, or stable—informing remedy optimization and long-term monitoring strategy.
